Belly Dance Deities 101

Time: 10am - 11:30am

Start your Sunday with movement, music, and the magic of belly dance! 


Whether you’re brand new to this beautiful art form or a dancer looking to refine your technique, this workshop is the perfect way to connect with your body, express yourself, and feel empowered.

 

This is more than just a class—it’s a chance to explore the joy of dance in a welcoming and supportive space. You’ll be guided step by step, so all you need to bring is an open mind, your favourite coin belt, and a love for trying something new.

 

In this workshop, we will cover: 

  • Foundations of Belly Dance: Learn the essential moves inspired by the rich cultures of the MENAHT (Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic, Turkish) regions.

  • Learning Made Easy: Discover approachable ways to master shimmies, undulations, hip drops, figure eights and more - all broken down into simple steps.

  • Expression and Flow: Learn how to combine powerful accents with soft, flowing movements to find your unique style.

  • Connecting with Music: Feel the rhythms, connect with melodies, and move in harmony with music of the MENAHT regions.

  • Choreography Finale: We’ll take everything we’ve learnt and put it in a short, easy-to-follow combination that will leave you feeling accomplished and inspired.

 

This is your chance to dance for yourself - no pressure, no judgment, just pure joy. Whether you’re rediscovering your love of movement, or taking your first steps into belly dance, my goal is to leave you feeling energised, confident, and connected.

Hellenic Hips

Time: 11:45am - 1:15pm

Duration: (1 hour 30 minutes)

Level: Open Level

A Fusion of MENA Belly Dance and Hellenic Tsifteteli

Get ready to move, groove, and connect with the heart of Arabic & Hellenic culture in this vibrant workshop! 

 

Building on the foundations from our previous workshop, we’ll explore the dynamic interplay of the earthy, grounded movements of Raqs Sharqi (Middle Eastern belly dance) with the fluid, flowing stylings of Hellenic Tsifteteli. Together, these two forms create a unique fusion that balances fire and earth with air and water, bringing elegance and passion to every step.

 

 

In this workshop, we will cover:

  • Signature Movements: Deepen your understanding of the movements that define both belly dance and tsifteteli. Learn how to embrace their individualistic roots while appreciating their shared qualities.

  • Stylistic Fusion: Explore the similarities and differenced between he two styles and discover how to seamlessly blend them for a powerful and harmonious dance.

  • Expand Your Horizons: Learn techniques within the essential hip work, shimmies, undulations and more, infused with a Hellenic flair. Focus on transitions and creating g fluid combinations that feel natural and expressive.

  • Musical Fusion: Learn how to interpret and dance to both Raqs Sharqi & Tsifteteli music, understanding the rhythms, melodies, and emotional storytelling behind these styles.

  • Feel Good Combination: Put it all together in a fun and expressive combination that showcases the fusion of Raqs Sharqi & Tsifteteli, to an Arab/Greek medley.

Performance Mastery

Level: Open, Intermediate, Advanced, Professional Levels

From the Studio to the Stage!

For those interested, venturing or established in soloist stage performances - this one is for you! What's so beautiful about belly dance is that no two performer styles are alike. Individuality is a key aspect in performance, and exploring different facets can lead you to finding out what sets you apart from the rest.

 

Either building on the skills from the previous workshops, or from your own experiences in belly dance education, the aim of this workshop is to introduce you to your own stage performance fantasy, and assist you in creating your own professional belly dance choreography in the future. We will refine your technique and stage presence, and into the realm of authentic performance. If you’re looking for a challenge, we will be working with improvisation, quick thinking, physical endurance and musicality to explore your stage identity. 

 

In this workshop, you will:

  • Musicality & Dynamics: Discover how to play with tempos, rhythms, and dynamics o create a performance that his both technically and emotionally captivating. 

  • Stage Use & Presence: Explore how to use the entire stage to your advantage. Learn how to choreograph and move with purpose, and command attention from any corner of the stage. We will run through the importance of transitions and travelling, and how to ensure a strong stage presence is maintained throughout the entirety of a performance.

  • Emotional Storytelling: Understand the power of emotion in belly dance. Learn how to connect with music on a deeper level and convey a story through your movements, engaging your audience with every gesture and expression.

  • Improvisational Skills: Master the art of improvisation, which is key to authentic MENAHT (Middle Eastern, North African, Hellenic, Turkish) dance. We’ll work on various drills and exercises to build your confidence in improvisation, so you can handle unexpected changes, enhance your fluidity, learn how to anticipate music, and create more organic, expressive movements in your performance.

  • Combining Techniques into a Flowing Routine: Integrate everything you’ve learned into a structured performance combination. We’ll refine your techniques and improvisational abilities, allowing you to perform with fluidity, confidences and style. You’ll also have the chance to showcase your ability to seamlessly blend choreographed and improvised sections in a dynamic and engaging routine.

 

The defining goal of this workshop is to have you feeling more assured and prepared to take the stage for your next powerful performance that reflects both your technique and emotional depth. Whether you’re preparing for a debut solo, an emerging artist looking to push yourself, or simply interested in learning different ways to expand your performance style, this workshop is designed to help you unlock your ultimate potential as a belly dance soloist.

What to Bring:

A water bottle & towel will be enough!

What to Wear:

Tight fitted clothing to help you see your body movements and technique well! Can be as either activewear, jazz clothing, or belly dance training outfits.

Footwear to be either barefoot or in socks. 

Optional: I encourage dancers to experiment with wearing or rolling the waistbands of their lower body clothing to their hip bones. This not only allows you to see your body movements much more clearly, but also elongates your torso to help with your overall posture. This is only an encouragement, not mandatory. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, a coin belt or hip scarf will still execute the same! 

Inclusivity:

These workshops are open to everyone, regardless of your experience level, age, gender, body type, or background. Belly dance is for anyone who wants to connect with their body, express themselves, and have fun while doing it. Whether you’re completely new to dance or have years of experience, you’ll be in a supportive and inclusive environment where you can grow at your own pace, without judgment.

 

Dance is a powerful tool for self-expression, and the beautiful diversity of everyone who walks through the door is celebrated. Every body tells a unique story, and my focus is on helping you feel confident, strong, and empowered - no matter where you’re starting from. In this space, you’re free to explore, experiment, and embrace your own journey, surrounded by a community that uplifts and encourages each other.

Terms & Conditions

By booking a spot in one, two, or three belly dance workshops, you agree to the following terms and conditions: 1. Booking & Payment: • All workshop bookings must be made in advance through our designated booking platform or via direct communication with the workshop organiser [Joanna Belly Dance: ABN 95206347951]. • Payment is required at the time of booking to secure your spot. We accept Credit card, PayPal, Bank Transfer. • A confirmation email will be sent upon successful booking and payment. Please keep this for your records. 2. Cancellation & Refund Policy: • Cancellations made at least 7 days prior to the workshop date will receive a full refund. • Cancellations made within 7 days of the workshop are non-refundable. • If you are unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances, please contact us as soon as possible to discuss potential alternatives, such as transferring to another person / name. 3. Workshop Transfers: • Transfers to a different workshop name are allowed up to 72 hours before the workshop commencement, subject to availability. • A transfer fee may apply depending on the circumstances, and you will be informed prior to processing the transfer. 4. Workshop Availability & Minimum Numbers: • Workshops will run as scheduled unless a minimum number of participants is not met. In the event of cancellation due to low attendance, you will be notified in advance and offered a full refund or the option to transfer to another workshop. • We reserve the right to cancel or reschedule a workshop due to unforeseen circumstances. If this happens, we will notify you promptly and provide options for rescheduling or refunding. 5. Health & Safety: • Participants are responsible for ensuring they are physically fit to participate in belly dance workshops. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, injuries, or concerns, please consult with your healthcare provider before attending. • Please arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the workshop starts to allow time for check-in and warm-up. 6. Dress Code: • Wear comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. A coin belt is recommended but not mandatory. • Barefoot dancing is encouraged for most workshops, but feel free to wear dance shoes or socks if you prefer. 7. Respect for Others: • Our workshops are designed to be inclusive, positive, and supportive. We ask that all participants treat each other with respect and kindness. Disrespectful behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in being asked to leave the workshop without a refund. 8. Photography & Video: • We may take photos or videos during workshops for promotional purposes. If you prefer not to be photographed or filmed, please inform the instructor before the workshop begins. • Participants are welcome to take photos or videos for personal use but must respect others’ privacy and not disrupt the class. 9. Liability Waiver: • By booking a spot, you acknowledge that belly dance involves physical movement and can carry some risk of injury. You accept full responsibility for your participation and release the instructor and organizer from any liability related to injury or harm during the workshop. 10. Changes to Terms: • We reserve the right to modify these terms and conditions at any time. If changes are made, you will be notified accordingly.
